In this blog post, I will be highlighting Pacific Rim (the 2013 movie, not the location 😅). It is a bit different than my usual highlights but I did say when I started the TYMNHS series, I will be sharing inspiration from everywhere and today it is from a semi-mainstream action movie!
Pacific Rim is more than about Jaegars (human controlled robots) and Kaijus (colossal Alien sea monsters) fighting for dominance over our fragile planet; the former wanting to save their homes and the latter using it to deplete resources and as a intergalactic stopover. Produced by Guillermo del Toro, the movie has a moody aesthetic to it.
The Jaegars themselves are controlled by two pilots working together with a mental bridge or “Drifting”, that shares their thoughts, emotions, memories and fears with each other and they have to work together in sync in order to control the robot forward. Creatively, this was the element that attracted me the most to the film. What will happen if you could experience another’s emotions as it happened? What if their fears became your own for a brief moment? The complex human interaction makes this movie rich and engaging.
I am a great fan of the movie visuals (though I didn’t realize it that it was shot in my city!). When I was near the waterfront, on a dark rainy or cloudy day, I would imagine giant sea monsters emerging from the waters! Does that happen to you? (No? Just me then lol).
I took this photo on a fine gloomy day.
I hope that you liked this highlight. I would love to hear your thoughts and if you are also a fan of this movie. Hope you discovered something new and inspiring today 😊
